Information about Casa by the Sea
Casa by the Sea is just a little over 50 miles south of San Diego, California.
It is located at a remote beach facility near the seaport town of Ensenada,
Mexico. The setting is beautiful, peaceful, and conducive to change. Casa
by the Sea provides an effective program for teens who are struggling
in their home, school, or community. This Program is specifically designed
to help teens replace inappropriate attitudes, behaviors, and habits with
new, productive ones. Ensenada is an excellent location for the Program
because it offers the benefits of a foreign site, with easy access to
the U.S. At Casa by the Sea, students are enriched and effectively impacted
by a unique cultural experience in Mexico's warm, simple surroundings.
Students learn Spanish, which further enhances the process of change.
The benefits of a foreign site are numerous. First, the students are put into an entirely new environment, away from the negative friends and influences that have adversely affected their lives. Second, the teens discover that they are in an unfamiliar culture. As a result, the teens tend to be much more teachable and open to change and direction. Third, a foreign experience helps broaden the teen's insight, awareness and perspective. Fourth, a foreign setting is much more impacting and instills a greater appreciation for home and family. Fifth, not only do the teens get the help they need, but a valuable foreign experience that they will likely remember and appreciate the rest of their lives. Additionally, due to the greater value of the U.S. dollar in Mexico, the Program can provide its services at a significant reduction of cost to families. All of these reasons make Mexico an excellent option for teens needing to make changes in their lives. The Program consists of several key components: effective behavior modification, a series of highly motivational "emotional growth seminars" called TASKS, progressive academic curriculum, a structured daily schedule that includes daily personal development courses.
TASKS (Teen Accountability, Self-Esteem,
and Keys to Success) A series of highly effective educational
seminars specifically designed to teach character building.
During these TASKS seminars, teens learn about key character building qualities such as: Accountability,
honesty, integrity, trust, choices, responsibility, anger, and especially
self-esteem. While the student is completing his or her series of seminars,
the parents are invited to attend Parent Seminars and Parent Support Meetings
held in many locations throughout the United States. The culmination of
the TASKS seminars is when parents and students are invited to attend two
effective Parent/Child Workshops. These are designed to assist each family
in improving communications and strengthening relationships.
Academics
Casa by the Sea has an extremely progressive academic program. The curriculum
is individualized and competency based, allowing students to work at their
own pace and maximize the learning process. Students are not held back
by other teens in the class, lesson plans, teachers' schedules, course
offerings, or class availability. The students are tutored by a teacher
and in some cases, it is possible to complete courses on an accelerated
basis. Each student is assessed upon admission and then assisted in designing
their specific course of study.
Behavior Modification
High standards exist. Inappropriate behavior is confronted, consequences
are assessed and the behavior is redirected. Appropriate behavior is reinforced
and rewarded. A merit system is used requiring each teen to earn their
status and privileges through a standard program using a level system.
Activities
On and off grounds activities provide a proper balance of recreation,
exercise, learning, personal development and social opportunities. Initially
all activities are on grounds. Over a period of time teens may earn the
privilege of participating in off campus activities; which could include
sight-seeing, water sports, beach outings, and cultural events, etc. Mexico
is well suited for these types of experiences.
Personal Development Courses
Ongoing Emotional Growth and Personal Development Courses are an important
part of the overall program. These courses intermittently utilize resources
such as: professional audio & video tapes, selective reading material,
special workshops and group feedback sessions.
GROWING AND WINNING
Teens develop and grow though the balanced schedule of behavior modification,
academics, personal development courses, health fitness, and recreation.
This daily structure provides the catalyst for students to develop positive
habits. Positive habits not only create success, but also allow teens
to feel better about themselves. Once an appropriate self-esteem is established,
the teens become INTERNALLY MOTIVATED: This means they will want to do
the right thing for the right reasons; not because the parents or the
Program desires them to, but because they want to, having experienced
the positive benefits for themselves. Once this is accomplished, the war
is over. The family structure can be restored.
Working with parents is a key component to the success of the Program. Families have frequent phone contact with their child's Family Representative and when appropriate, the teen is included. Communication with the family is instrumental in addressing issues, creating a family purpose and vision, reaching understandings, and setting goals. Casa by the Sea's staff is committed to each teen and their family's success.
